GATE 2014 Paper Pattern

The GATE entrance examination is generally taken by those candidates who want to take admission in IITs, IISc, and NITs of the country. GATE exam is accepted by these institutes to enrol students into various M.Tech and Ph.D programmes. All questions are objective type in all the papers. Each paper will have 65 questions carrying 100 marks, out of which 10 questions carrying total of 15 marks are in General Aptitude (GA).

Type of Questions:

Multiple choice questions: The paper will consists multiple choice questions of 1 mark and 2 marks each. Each of the multiple choice questions will be objective type and all papers and sections contain four answers, of which one correct answer is to be marked.

Common data questions: These questions are also multiple choice questions, where two successive questions use the same set of input data.

Linked answer questions: These questions are also multiple choice questions, where the answer to the first question in the pair is required to answer its successor.

Numerical answer questions: Numerical answer questions, where the answer is a number to be entered by the candidates using the mouse and virtual keypad that will be provided on the screen. Numerical answer questions are only given in the online mode exam. The candidates who will appear in the paper Cs, EC, EE, IN, ME and PI have offline mode exam and do not face these questions.

Section weightage: Engineering mathematics will consist 15%  of the total marks, the General Aptitude section will carry 15% of the total marks and the rest of the sections will consist 70% of the total marks is devoted to the subjects of the paper.

Marking pattern: The multiple choice questions which will carry 1 marks, for each correct answer 1 mark will be awarded and for each wrong answer 1/3 mark will be deducted. Besides, for the linked answer question pair, where each question carries 2 marks, 2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer to the first question only. There is no negative marking for wrong answer to the second question of the linked answer question pair. If the first question in the linked pair is wrongly answered or is unattended, then the answer to the section in the pair will not be evaluated. There will be no negative marking for numerical answer type questions.
