No economic slowdown blues for top engineering schools

According to the latest placement trends at the country’s leading engineering institutes which indicated that there are no clouds for slowdown for these students. As per the institutes, the companies showed better and positive response towards hiring students and even they offered double salary packages in many cases. This year, these engineering colleges expected 10-15% of increase in the pay offers.

In present year’s Indian Institute of Technology Bombay’s placement, nearly 100 companies registered for placements-10% or more than that in the corresponding period last year. Companies from all sectors such as consultancy, banking, finance and core engineering have registered for placements. However, the formal recruitment process at the IITs will commence from December.

A placement committee member at IIT-B, said, “The response from companies has been very good so far. We have recently begun the process. We think it will get even better by December.” He further added, “While some companies have doubled salary packages, many have indicated they would recruit in good numbers.”

At pre-placement process offers at IIT-Kharagpur (IIT-KGP), Google has made offers to students for summer internship at the search engine giant. Sudhir Barai, head of training and placement, IIT-KGP, said, “Slowdown hasn’t been evident in so far as PPOs are concerned. As regards the final placements, we will get a better idea by next month, when recruiters’ registrations are completed.”

On the other side, for recruiters too, slowdown has hardly been a matter of concern-especially for the companies in the core engineering and IT sectors. Girish Mudgal, director of Time Tooth Technologies, a regular recruiter at IIT-KGP, IIT-Kanpur, IIT-B, IIT-Gandhinagar and IIT-Ropar said, “Since we engage in high-end research, we continue to need technical graduates and post-graduates every year. The slowdown has, therefore, not impacted our recruitment planning. We will continue to offer packages of Rs 6-7 lakh a year, the same as earlier.”
