Next big change for DU students, complete your masters degree in just one year

The Delhi University is now planning to make big change for the post-graduate level of studies. This new reform going to affect large number of students, those who have completed their four-year undergraduate programme will be able to get a master’s degree in one year in a credit-based system where they would have more flexibility in choosing their courses. Vice chancellor Dinesh Singh said, “Some glimpses of the changes would be visible from the forthcoming session itself although the full set of reforms will be introduced from 2015-16.” Singh also mentioned that he is planning to make some minor changes in the foundation courses. Singh said he wanted to bring in grand projects in the first year which will be trans-disciplinary.

He further added that the university was working on a system where UG students would be able to earn some extra credit in their fourth year and would be able to get benefits at PG level. Tran-disciplinary programmes will also be introduced.

Delhi University is working to start a credit-based system at the PG level that could enable a student out of a four-year undergraduate system to get a Master’s degree in one year. Singh added, “We are working on this. I wouldn't call them one year or two year, but rather call them credit based. So you are required to have a certain number of credits. If you are coming from Delhi (university) system, the requirements of credits will be much less in masters' programme than for someone coming from another system. The expectation is that a DU student will be able to gain the credits in about a year's time.”

He said, “Some experimental changes will come from the 2014-15 session. The real changes will come in one year from now. I have been speaking to department heads individually for sometime, asking them if they can build meta-department programmes so that some credit will come from project work and some from trans-disciplinary courses.”
