GATE 2014 Exam Preparation Tips

GATE 2014 is Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is the General Aptitude test which is generally taken by those who want to get admission in M. Tech course in leading IITs, NITs or IISc. of the country. The GATE exam is designed to test the subject knowledge, language skills and analytical skills. Regardless of the optional subject you may choose, General Aptitude remains constant in each and every one of the 22 optional papers. Although General Aptitude is bit easy, this can be cracked easily by some smart preparation. The whole process of preparation has few steps and every individual student who cracked the nutshell of this exam has followed few steps. Here are some important tips to follow to ace this renowned entrance exam:

1.       Define your target in advance: Before start preparing for the exam it is really important that you set your goal in terms of the rank you want to achieve. If you are planning to get admission in the leading IITs, NITs, IISc or PSUs, you should secure a rank not less than 1000 and hence you will have to prepare well on all the topics.

2.       Know all about your exam in advance: Once you start preparing for the exam it became more necessary that you know your strengths and areas where improvement is required. Based on this you can plan your preparation strategy.

3.       Work on your concepts: The GATE exam is concepts based exam and based on concepts and applications. Aspirants should brush up their concepts well and they can also join some classroom programmes or an online tutoring programme that will help them to strengthen their concepts.

4.       Practice previous year’s papers: Practice as much as you can take previous years papers to know the pattern of the exam. Solve all type of questions you come across in various books and be prepared on all questions pattern.

5.       Work on basic formulas: This is engineering paper not like any other competitive exam where paper is majorly based on aptitude and general knowledge, besides this paper is majorly based on engineering concepts. Engineering subjects have lots of formulas, which are more often practiced than not to be memorised. It is really important that you practice all major and minor formulas and finish each topic or referring topics which will help you to brush up your concepts.

6.       Don’t forget to prepare for general ability: The exam consist general ability section too and it comprises 15 percent of the total marks, therefore to score high in this exam one should prepare well for this section. To score high in this section you need to prepare well as this is not complicated section, some smart study and practice will do the trick in this section.

7.       Attempt mock test: To get familiar with the paper pattern and understand the difficulty level of the exam it is important that you should take up mock test series as it will help you to adapt the online pattern. It will help you to know your weaker sections and sections which require more practice.  

8.       Work on speed and accuracy:  While preparing for the exam it is important that you should keep a watch on your speed and accuracy. It is really important factor as it can help you to complete your paper on time without any hassle. If you are very sure about your answers it will help you to score high and increase your chances to get ranked among the top 1000 scores, so accuracy is equally important.

9.       Make a time table: To excel in the exam you should follow and stick to a time-table. While preparing a time-table remember that you should cover all the topics and subjects. Divide your time well and give more time to weaker sections or sections required more attention and practice. Religiously follow your time-table as it will help you to cover all the topics on time and also enable you to manage your preparation well with ample breaks.

10.   Take enough breaks: ‘All work no play makes Jack dull’ is always true when it comes to study and preparation. While preparing for any exam you should take enough breaks to relax and refresh your mood. You should take frequent breaks or get involve in some physical activities such as jogging, badminton or carom, or listen to your favourite music as it will lighten your mood and body to start a fresh.
