Odisha will take AIPMT for MBBS and BDS admission in 2014

Odisha state has decided not to conduct state-level entrance exam for MBBS and BDS admission for the upcoming session of 2014. The state has decided to participate in the All India Pre-Medical Entrance Test (AIPMT) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

Last year, Odisha had enrolled students for bachelor medical and dental courses from the National Entrance-cum-Eligibility Test (NEET UG). Principal secretary (health and medical education) Pradipta Mohapatra, said, “The Centre has moved SC to review its July 18 order.” The state government has sent a letter to CBSE expressing its willingness to join this exam. After the SC struck down the NEET arrangement, the CBSE started preparations for AIPMT, the pre-2013 system for admission to 15% seats of state medical colleges and all seats of central government-run medical institutions.

It at the same time replied to state if they would like to enrol 85% students in their medical colleges form the AIPMT state merit list. The state government has given nod to this suggestion.

Mohapatra said, “For the 85% seats under the state quota, admissions would be through state merit list of AIPMT by following the state reservation norms. The counseling would be done by OJEE. Admissions for the rest 15% seats would be from the AIPMT national merit list.”

AIPMT will be conducted on 4th May, 2013. CBSE has mentioned that there will be no changes in the syllabus and it will be same as notified by the Medical Council of India for NEET-UG. The entrance test would comprise one paper with 180 objective-type questions from physics, chemistry, botany and zoology. There will be 45 questions in each section.
