40 engineering colleges waiting for govt. not for closure

Nearly 40 engineering colleges which are situated in the Hyderabad have asked the state government’s permission to close their functioning as they are unable to fill all the seats to run classes.

An official also informed that the colleges have send representations to the technical education department and to All India Council for Technological Education (AICTE). These colleges failed to lure more students to their colleges; moreover, these colleges have just five to six students for the past three years. After the counselling of EAMCET entrance exam there were 13 private colleges of 609 which failed to enrol even a single student.

This year, less than 10 students enrolled in 34 engineering colleges and total of 1.08 lakh seats in the convener quota had no takers. Final closure of college might take lot more time as it is long procedure and require lots of paper work and formalities to be done.

A total of 2.18 lakh students qualified the EAMCET-2013 out of which only 1.30 lakh came forward for EAMCET certificate verification. There are total of 2,19,296 seats are available in private engineering colleges, however just 6,550 seats are available in 34 government colleges to be filled.

College management said that students who have been enrolled in the programmes will be asked to shift nearby colleges to continue their education. A college management representative, said, “Some colleges where just a handful of students take admission through counselling are expected to shift their students to other colleges for classroom lessons. Meanwhile, these colleges will remain shut to avoid payment of salaries to its teaching and non-teaching staff.”
