Xavier Institute of Management Bhubaneswar students fate uncertain

Xavier Institute of Management Bhubaneswar (XIMB) has recently got approval from state government to establish a university, which has started controversy by giving admission to 60 more students in Master in Business Administration (MBA) programme for the session of 2013-15. The ate of all these 60 students is not clear as they have been admitted under Xavier University, which is yet to be started.

A students of the institute said, “There is a lot of confusion and we don't know who will give us the final degree - XIMB or Xavier University. The course may be the same but the name varies as Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) and Master in Business Administration (MBA), which is very confusing for recruiters.”

As the Xavier University bill got approval in the month of May this year, XIMB authorities enrolled 60 students in MBA, which raised the total number of students in PGDM course from 180 to 240. But, the university has not taken approval of the University Grant Commission (UCG), nor does it have any academic council, senate or syndicate to start the course.

XIMB senior faculty member said, "As far as teaching is concerned, there is no difference between PGDM and MBA. But for admission of students and giving certificates the rules and norms are different for a university and for an institute. As a result, there may be problems for students if these norms are not followed properly."

Besides, the XIMB dean Biswa Swarup Misra said students should not be worried over this point. He said, "There will be no problem for students of MBA under Xavier University as XIMB is also a part of the university now. Since we have existing infrastructure in management we decided to start the MBA course under the Xavier University. It was a conscious decision and there will be no disparity between the students of both courses."
