GGSIPU starting a new course in Mass Communication

Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) is introducing a Ph.D programme in Mass Communication from the upcoming sessions. This course is specially designed for those students who want to teach journalism. CP Singh, Dean, University School of Mass Communication (USMC), GGSIPU, said, “Currently, there is a gap of around 60% between industry demand and the students that come in. This is because students are not trained in the right methodology of research. Some institutes come out with research papers but the information is unreliable because they are not trained in research methodologies. When students complete their PhD, they will be trained and have the right skill-set for research.”

In this programme, students can opt to specialise in journalism, media business and economics, communication of innovations, media and youth, new media and film and electronic media. Candidates who have secured 60% in Master in relevant subject eligible to apply for the programme. The university have not yet finalised number of seats for the programme, there are likely to be near 12 seats. The university will do screening at three different levels. He said, "The first level will involve testing students on their quantitative understanding of numbers and statistics because research inevitably involves understanding charts, tables, basic mathematics, etc. They will be tested on their logical reasoning, English comprehension, etc. At the second level, students will be tested on the understanding of their subjects. So they will be tested in areas such as mass communication theories, mass media, etc; communication skills in English. The final round will involve a personal interview. Round one will comprise 200 marks, round two and three will comprise 400 marks each."

He further informed, "The minimum fee that a student has to pay will be around Rs 39,000. The minimum time a student takes to complete his/her PhD is three years and the maximum time a student may take is eight years. The deadline for submission of forms is April 30. A written test will be conducted on May 12."
