Only 3 IITs ranked among top 100 universities in Asia

Times Higher Education magazine has recently published a ranking of top universities of Asia, its a matter of shame or pride for Indian universities that only three institute from India managed to grab a position among the top 100 Universities of the world.

In this top 100 Asia Universities list, IIT-Kharagpur is ranked at 30th position, IIT-Bombay at 33rd place and IIT-Roorkee at 56th stand. In this list, University of Tokyo secure the top position with an overall score of 78.3 followed by the National University of Singapore with 77.5 and University of Hong Kong with 75.6 points and Perking University scored 70.7 points in overall ranking.

The ranking has been conducted on various parameters and their performance on 13 different fields, which includes teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

IIT-Kharagpur officiating director S K Som, said, "We are very happy with the results, because we have been striving very hard to compete with global universities. IIT-Kharagpur had earlier launched Vision 2020 with the aim of joining the list of the world's top 20 universities in science and technology. "We are focusing on research excellence, faculty excellence and industry linkages."

These three IITs have performed well on industry income or innovation and at the same time secure good score in the teaching and research work as well. These three institutes have scored fewer marks in term of international outlook, with none securing more than 20 points.

If we compare between the Asian and the world rankings, which indicates that IITs which have secured places among the top 100 Asian universities, failed to grab a position among top 200 universities of the world. Among the top universities of the world IIT-Kharagpur has been ranked at 226th position.

Not even a single India university or institute managed to grab a position among the top 200 universities in the world in the recent survey done by Times Higher Education Rankings. In this Asia University Rankings Taiwan leads with 17 institutions, followed by China with 15 and Korea with 14 institutions.

Sudhir Chella Rajan, head, department of humanities and social sciences, IIT-Madras, said the ranking had been done with a pinch of salt as much of the review was based on perception, not actual output. He said, "It is said that those with publicity departments do better."
